Mother of two Emperors, Alexander I and Nicholas I, Maria Feodorovna was born Princess Sophia Dorothea of Wurttemberg, and took the name of Maria Feodorovna upon her conversion to Orthodoxy.
Maria Feodorovna proved to be one of the most interesting women of her age; she was instrumental in the construction of Pavlovsk Palace, which stands today as one of the most important examples of Russian Neoclassicism.
